Vehicular traffic on the Sabarimala main trunk road was affected from 6.30 p.m. on Sunday following the inundation of the road by the waters of the swollen Kumbalampoika canal. The canal breached its banks owing to heavy rain at Narikkuzhy, near Vadasserikkara. Vehicles were diverted from Mannarakulanji to Vadasserikkara, via Mandirom, from 6.30 pm, the police said.
Traffic was disrupted on the Erumely-Plappally road at Kanamala too rain water flooding the road in the afternoon.
Incessant rain caused damage to properties and standing crops in different parts of the district. Three houses were damaged and one completely destroyed in separate landslips in the Pathanamthitta municipal limits in the evening. One Nabeesa Beevi, 75, hailing from Krishnapuram, near Kayamkulam, who was in the completely destroyed house, died at the Medical College Hospital, Alappuzha, the police said. District Collector S. Lalithambika, accompanied by Revenue Department officers, visited the affected areas. Minor landslips were reported from different parts of Ranni taluk on the day. The Manakkayam causeway on the Ranni-Kurampanmoozhy road was washed away in strong currents.
Holiday for schools
Monday will be a holiday for all schools in the Kozhencherry taluk in view of the flood situation, a press release issued by the District Collector said here on Sunday.
